Visitors' Day

Although SVF is typically closed to the public, every June, for one day, we open our gates to the public. Parking is free at Fort Adams Park, where a complimentary trolley shuttles guests to the Foundation for a half-mile self-guided walking tour.

Informational sign boards along the way provide visitors with the historic significance of each building and describe the Foundation’s extensive restoration process. Numerous rare and endangered breeds of livestock are on display, in addition to a professional sheep-shearing demonstration, liquid nitrogen demonstrations and the opportunity to meet our veterinarians. SVF’s embryologist is on hand to discuss how germplasm (semen and embryos) is cryopreserved. Please be sure to check our news section where we announce upcoming dates for our next Visitors' Day.

SVF Lecture Series

The SVF Lecture Series features topics pertaining to local farming systems, sustainable agriculture and conservation. These events are free to the public and held at Swiss Village Farm, 152 Harrison Avenue, Newport, RI. For more details on our upcoming lectures, please click here.

K-12 Field Trips & Outreach

SVF occasionally offers field trip opportunities for school groups in grades K-12. Content can be modified based on the children’s ages and may range from basics of farm animal species to a detailed explanation of our germplasm collection and preservation program. These field trips are available on a limited basis.

Veterinary Students

To accomplish our scientific mission, SVF collaborates with Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. This partnership provides a unique opportunity for Tufts’ third- and fourth-year veterinary students to learn about reproductive sciences. Students accompany our veterinary staff in hands-on livestock treatment and germplasm collection, assist in surgical procedures and observe advanced cryopreservation techniques.

Undergraduate Internship

SVF has developed a competitive internship program offered to undergraduate students enrolled in a biological science major at an accredited academic institution. One intern is accepted per spring or fall semester and is expected to spend 35-40 hours per week with SVF and Tufts staff. Students are exposed to all aspects of our program, including animal husbandry, germplasm collection and processing, and veterinary science. This is not a paid position; however, it may count for as many as 12 general education credits toward graduation. Please contact us for additional information.
